YMCA Okanagan Swims

Thank you Very much Berani for your very informative presentation about the YMCA Community programs.

Berani mentioned that the Y does more than manage pools and gyms.  They also have 31 programming locations in the Okanagan.  The Y operates 17 daycare centres, serving more than 1000 spots for children.  They also help people across the board including young people, youth and development, all the way to senior citizens. Then Berani explained two main programs during her presentation to our club.

  • The first program is the healthy snacks program that follows the Canadian health guidelines for nutrition.
  • The second program is the Okanagan swim program. Every grade 3 student in the school district receives free swim lessons that provide essential drown proof training for around 1400 children.  The YMCA continues to work with community partners and different initiatives to help support the Okanagan Swims program and ensure children throughout the region have access to essential water safety and swim instruction.
To help raise funds they are holding a “Make a Splash” event (duck race) at H20.  People are invited to adopt a duck for $25 (the cost of one student in the program). There will be prizes for the first ducks to cross the line and prizes for the most chilled ducks in the event.
