Overview of Bitcoin as an alternative to traditional investments
Our Speaker today: Scott Dedels, Canadian entrepreneur, writer & speaker, based in Kelowna.
Fascinating talk this morning We were joined by Scott Dedels, CEO of Block Rewards, who gave us a clear, plain-English presentation titled "Bitcoin, Explained". He cut through the noise, skipped the technical jargon, and broke down what digital money actually means. Scott explained that Bitcoin is digital money with a strictly fixed supply, capped forever at 21 million coins, that operates without control from any central bank or govrt. Born out of the 2008 financial crisis, the network has run continuously for 17 years with ~99.99% uptime. Instead of getting bogged down in jargon, he described how transactions are simply recorded on a global public ledger maintained by tens of thousands of computers. Unlike traditional currencies that quietly lose purchasing power over time, Bitcoin was engineered to offer true digital scarcity as a borderless, peer-to-peer asset. He also made an important distinction between Bitcoin, a decentralized monetary asset with no company or CEO, & the thousands of other "cryptos" that behave more like speculative startup stocks. The talk wrapped up with a Q&A. Photo: our President, Trish McLeod, presents Scott with a token of our appreciation for visiting the club, we will donate 10 child polio vaccines to End Polio Now.
